In March 2010 a Manifesto of Virtual Art had been prepared by the Australian Center of Virtual Art, and signed by Adam Nash, Justin Clemens, and Christopher Dodds, arguing that “The virtual generation see themselves as ‘users’ not ‘audiences’. Virtual generations are participants and creators not receivers.”
When someone experiences a traditional art form like painting and sculpture, we call her/him a viewer. In interactive new media art piece s/he has become the participant, the creator, the user. It has composed by the artist and has completed by the participant, and this makes the experience physical. In traditional art forms the viewer experiences the art piece mentally, s/he completes and interacts with the piece in her/his mind, and thus, s/he is a passive viewer. However, interactive new media art works have to be interacted physically through interfaces, s/he reshapes or creates the piece in every time s/he experience it. Therefore, interactive new media artworks are open-ended.
This paper discusses viewer/participant’s position in the digital age through the examples of interactive new media artworks.
